Why Ghana belongs on your list
Ghana blends warm hospitality, deep history and vivid landscapes. English is the official language, the roads connect easily, and from Accra you can reach beaches, rainforests and centuries-old castles within a day. Here are the highlights worth planning a trip around.
Cape Coast and Elmina Castles
These UNESCO World Heritage forts on the Atlantic coast were central to the transatlantic slave trade. Guided tours through the dungeons and the Door of No Return are sombre but essential. Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa.
Kakum National Park
Just inland from Cape Coast, Kakum protects dense rainforest. Its famous canopy walkway strings seven rope bridges 40 metres above the forest floor. Arrive early for the best chance of spotting birds and monkeys.
Independence Square and Accra
In the capital, walk Black Star Square with its Independence Arch, visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum honouring Ghana's first president, and browse the bustling Makola Market. Don't miss the Arts Centre for kente cloth and carvings.
Kumasi and Ashanti culture
Kumasi is the heart of the Ashanti kingdom. The Manhyia Palace Museum tells the story of the Asantehene, while nearby villages such as Bonwire (kente weaving), Ahwiaa (wood carving) and Ntonso (adinkra printing) showcase living crafts.
Mole National Park
In the north, Mole is Ghana's largest wildlife reserve. On foot or by jeep safari you can see elephants, antelope, warthogs and baboons, often right around the hilltop lodge waterhole.
Lake Volta and the Akosombo Dam
One of the world's largest man-made lakes, Lake Volta offers ferry rides and lakeside relaxation. The Akosombo Dam that created it is an engineering landmark a couple of hours from Accra.
Wli Waterfalls
Near the Togo border in the Volta Region, Wli is the tallest waterfall in West Africa. A scenic hike through forest leads to the lower falls, where thousands of fruit bats roost on the cliffs.
Busua and the western beaches
For surf and slow days, head to Busua beach, or the palm-lined cove near Cape Three Points, mainland Ghana's southernmost tip. Nearby Nzulezo is a stilt village built entirely over a lagoon.
Practical tips
- Cedi is the local currency; carry cash for markets and tro-tros.
- The dry season (November to March) is best for travel.
