How much does Croatia cost per day?
Croatia uses the euro (it joined the eurozone in 2023), so prices feel familiar to most European travellers. Costs are highest on the Dalmatian coast in July and August, and noticeably lower inland and in the shoulder season (May, June, September).
- Budget: 50-70 EUR per day (hostel dorm or guesthouse, bakery and konoba meals, buses, beaches)
- Mid-range: 90-140 EUR per day (3-star hotel or private apartment, restaurant dinners, the occasional ferry or tour)
- Comfort: 180 EUR and up (boutique hotels in Dubrovnik or Hvar, taxis, day trips and islands)
Sample prices
- Coffee in a cafe: 1.80-2.50 EUR
- Bakery burek or sandwich: 2.50-4 EUR
- Konoba (tavern) main course: 12-18 EUR; grilled fish by weight runs higher
- Half-litre of local beer: 3-4 EUR; glass of Plavac Mali wine: 4-5 EUR
- Scoop of gelato: around 2 EUR
- Zagreb tram ticket: about 0.93 EUR (30 min)
- Jadrolinija ferry, Split to Hvar (foot passenger): roughly 7-10 EUR
- Dubrovnik city walls entry: about 35 EUR
- Plitvice Lakes day ticket (summer): 40 EUR
Money and cards
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and contactless and Apple/Google Pay are common in cities and tourist towns. Carry some cash for small konobas, markets, parking and island bakeries. Use bank ATMs (Zagrebacka, PBZ, OTP) and always decline the machine's currency conversion (DCC) so your own bank does the exchange. Avoid the yellow Euronet ATMs, which give poor rates. Tipping is modest: rounding up or about 10 percent for good service.
Smart ways to save
- Travel in the shoulder season for warm seas and 30-40 percent lower lodging.
- Eat where locals do: a gablec (workers' lunch) or marenda is a cheap, filling fixed meal.
- Shop the green markets (Dolac in Zagreb, Pazar in Split) for fruit, cheese and prsut.
- Take public ferries instead of private boat tours between islands.
- Buy a refillable water bottle; Croatian tap water is safe and excellent.
- Look for free beaches and coves rather than managed beach clubs with paid loungers.
