Getting Around Colombia: A Complete Transport Guide

From Bogota's TransMilenio and Medellin's Metro to long-haul buses, ride apps, and car rental, here is how to move around Colombia with confidence.

Trains in Colombia

Colombia has almost no passenger rail. The main exception is a scenic tourist train, the Tren de la Sabana, which runs weekends from Bogota toward Zipaquira and its famous salt cathedral. Don't plan intercity travel around trains, use buses and flights instead.

Metro and city transit

Medellin has Colombia's only metro, a clean, cheap network linked to cable cars (Metrocable) that climb the hillside neighborhoods, plus a tram. A single ride costs around 3,000 COP. Buy a rechargeable Civica card to save money.

Bogota relies on TransMilenio, a bus rapid-transit system with dedicated lanes and stations. Load a Tullave card and tap in. It is fast but crowds heavily at rush hour, so watch your belongings.

Intercity buses

Buses are the backbone of Colombian travel. Companies like Bolivariano, Copetran, Berlinas and Expreso Brasilia connect every region. Terminals (terminal de transporte) are well organized in Bogota, Medellin and Cali. Overnight routes such as Bogota to Cartagena are long (around 20 hours), so flying is often smarter for big distances.

Ride-hailing apps

  • Uber, Didi and Cabify all operate in major cities and are popular with travelers.
  • inDrive lets you negotiate the fare.
  • Taxis Libres is a trusted local taxi app in Bogota.

Always confirm the driver and plate. In taxis, insist on the meter (taximetro) or agree the price first.

Car rental and driving

Rental is handy for coffee-region road trips around Salento, but city driving is hectic and parking scarce. You will need your passport, a credit card and your home license (an international permit helps). Watch for pico y placa rules that restrict cars on certain days by plate number, and avoid driving rural roads after dark.

Domestic flights

For distance, fly. Avianca, LATAM, Wingo and JetSmart link Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, Cali and the coast cheaply if booked ahead. It saves a full day versus the bus.

Practical tips

  • Carry small cash for buses and rural taxis.
  • Keep coins for TransMilenio top-ups in a pinch.
  • Apps like Moovit and Google Maps cover city routes well.
