A warm, welcoming culture
Colombians are famously friendly, expressive and proud of their regions. People often describe themselves not just as Colombian but as paisa (Medellin and Antioquia), costeno (Caribbean coast), rolo (Bogota) or valluno (Cali). Showing curiosity about these regional identities goes a long way.
Greetings
- A handshake works for first meetings in formal or business settings. Maintain eye contact and a warm smile.
- Among friends and women, a single kiss on the right cheek is common.
- Use titles like senor, senora and doctor/doctora (used generously, even without a doctorate) to show respect.
- Greet everyone when entering a small shop or room. A cheerful buenos dias or buenas tardes matters.
Social etiquette
- Punctuality is relaxed socially. For dinners or parties, arriving 20 to 30 minutes late is normal. For business, be on time.
- Family is central. Asking about someone's family is welcomed.
- Colombians value indirectness and warmth; a blunt no can feel harsh. People may say claro or ahorita without committing firmly.
- Dress neatly. Appearance is taken seriously, especially in cities like Medellin and Bogota.
Dos and donts
- Do learn a little Spanish. Even basic phrases earn real warmth.
- Do accept offered coffee, a tinto (small black coffee), as a gesture of hospitality.
- Dont bring up cocaine, Pablo Escobar or the armed conflict as casual small talk. It is a painful, sensitive subject.
- Dont photograph people, especially in rural or indigenous communities, without asking.
- Dont flash expensive phones or jewelry in crowded areas. Locals say no dar papaya (dont give an opportunity).
Tipping norms
- Restaurants usually add a propina voluntaria of 10 percent to the bill. The server will ask if you want to include it; saying yes is customary if service was good.
- Taxis are not tipped, though rounding up is appreciated.
- For hotel porters, 2,000 to 5,000 pesos is a kind gesture.
- Tour guides appreciate a tip if you enjoyed the experience.
Food and table manners
Try bandeja paisa, ajiaco in Bogota and fresh fruit juices. Keep both hands visible at the table, and wait for buen provecho before eating. Letting your host treat you, then offering to reciprocate, is polite.
