Getting Around Chile: Trains, Metro, Buses & Car Rental

A practical transport guide to Chile — Santiago Metro, intercity buses, ride apps, trains and renting a car for Patagonia and the Atacama.

Why transport in Chile is easier than you think

Chile is long and narrow, so most travel runs north to south. Distances are huge, but the bus network is excellent and domestic flights cover the gaps. Plan around the geography and you will move smoothly.

Santiago Metro and city transport

The Santiago Metro is the backbone of the capital: clean, fast and far-reaching with seven lines. You pay with a Bip! card, which also works on city buses (the Red system, formerly Transantiago). Load the card at metro stations and tap as you board. A single fare is around CLP 800-900.

  • Avoid rush hour (07:30-09:00 and 18:00-19:30) when trains are packed.
  • Buy a Bip! card on arrival; it saves cash and queueing.

Ride apps

Uber, Cabify and DiDi all work well in Santiago, Valparaiso and other cities. They are usually cheaper and clearer than street taxis. For official airport taxis, use the licensed counters in arrivals rather than touts.

Intercity buses

Long-distance buses are the heart of Chilean travel. Companies like Tur Bus, Pullman Bus and Cruz del Sur are comfortable and reliable. Overnight routes offer cama (flat-bed) and semi-cama seats.

  • Santiago's main terminals are Terminal Alameda and Terminal Sur.
  • Book ahead on Recorrido.cl or Pasajebus.com, especially in summer.

Trains

Chile's passenger rail (EFE/Tren Central) is limited but pleasant where it runs — for example Santiago to Chillan and Santiago to Rancagua/San Fernando. There is no train to Patagonia, so buses and flights fill the gap.

Domestic flights

For big distances, fly. LATAM, Sky Airline and JetSmart connect Santiago with Calama (for San Pedro de Atacama), Punta Arenas (Patagonia) and Easter Island. Book early and travel light, as low-cost fares charge for bags.

Renting a car

A car is ideal for the Atacama Desert, the Lake District and Carretera Austral. You need a passport, a credit card and usually to be 22 or older. Drive on the right, keep cash for peajes (tolls) on Ruta 5, and fill up often in remote areas.
