Bolivia's two seasons
Bolivia has just two real seasons: a dry season (May to October) and a wet season (November to April). Because much of the country sits high on the Altiplano above 3,500m, temperature depends more on altitude than month. La Paz and Uyuni stay cool year-round, while the Amazon lowlands and Santa Cruz are hot and humid.
Dry season (May to October): peak time
This is the best overall window for most travelers. Skies are clear, roads are passable, and trekking around the Cordillera Real is at its finest.
- June to August is peak season, with crisp blue days and freezing Altiplano nights (down to -10C at Uyuni).
- The Salar de Uyuni is dry and drivable, perfect for the classic mirror-free, crackled-hexagon shots and 3-day jeep tours.
- Book La Paz and Uyuni hostels ahead, especially around the June solstice.
Wet season (November to April): the mirror effect
Rain transforms the Salar de Uyuni into the famous giant mirror, with a thin layer of water reflecting the sky. Roughly January and February give the best reflections, though some tour routes close due to flooding.
- Expect afternoon downpours in the lowlands and on the Death Road.
- The Yungas and Amazon get muddy; some jungle lodges scale back.
- Upside: green landscapes, fewer crowds, lower prices.
Shoulder season
April-May and September-October are the sweet spots. You get mostly dry weather, thinner crowds, and gentler prices than the June-August peak.
Festivals by month
- February/March - Carnaval de Oruro: a UNESCO masterpiece with the Diablada devil dances; book months ahead.
- May/June - Gran Poder (La Paz): huge folkloric parade through the city.
- June 21 - Willkakuti (Aymara New Year): sunrise ceremonies at Tiwanaku.
- August 6 - Independence Day: parades nationwide.
- November 2 - Dia de los Difuntos: moving Andean Day of the Dead traditions.
Quick verdict
For reliable weather and salt-flat jeep tours, come June to August. For the mirror effect and fewer tourists, come January to February. For the best balance, target April-May or September-October.
