Why Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a land of rivers, deltas and warm hospitality, still off most tourist radars. That makes it one of South Asia's most rewarding destinations for curious travellers. Here are the places and experiences worth building a trip around.
The Sundarbans
The world's largest mangrove forest, shared with India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the elusive Royal Bengal tiger. Most visitors join a multi-day boat safari from Khulna or Mongla, spotting spotted deer, crocodiles and kingfishers along tidal channels.
Cox's Bazar
Stretching around 120 km, Cox's Bazar is widely cited as the world's longest natural sand beach. Sunrise over the Bay of Bengal, fresh seafood and nearby Himchari waterfall make it Bangladesh's top domestic holiday spot.
Old Dhaka
The historic heart of the capital is chaotic and captivating. Don't miss:
- Lalbagh Fort, a 17th-century Mughal complex
- Ahsan Manzil, the pink riverside Pink Palace
- Star Mosque with its star-studded mosaic interior
Take a rickshaw or a wooden boat across the Buriganga River for the full experience.
Srimangal tea country
Known as the tea capital, Srimangal is a green expanse of rolling plantations in the northeast. Sip the famous seven-layer tea, walk through Lawachara National Park to spot hoolock gibbons, and visit Madhabpur Lake.
Paharpur and Bagerhat
Two more UNESCO sites: the ruins of Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur form one of the largest Buddhist monasteries south of the Himalayas, while the Sixty Dome Mosque at Bagerhat is a masterpiece of 15th-century Islamic architecture.
Sylhet and Ratargul
The Sylhet region offers shrines, tea gardens and the Ratargul Swamp Forest, a freshwater swamp you explore by paddle boat during the monsoon. Nearby Jaflong and Bichanakandi dazzle with crystal streams and stone beds beneath the Indian hills.
Saint Martin's Island
Bangladesh's only coral island, off the southern tip, is a slow-paced escape of clear water, coconut palms and fresh tuna. Reach it by ferry from Teknaf in the dry season.
Sonargaon and the Panam City
A short trip from Dhaka, this former medieval capital preserves the haunting abandoned mansions of Panam City and a fine folk-art museum.
Practical tips
- The best travel season is November to March, when it is cool and dry.
- Carry cash; cards are rarely accepted outside big hotels.
- Dress modestly and always ask before photographing people.
