Getting Around Austria: Trains, Buses, Cars and Apps

A practical transport guide to Austria: ride the OBB rail network, navigate Vienna's U-Bahn, hire a car for Alpine drives, and use ride apps with confidence.

Trains are king in Austria

Austria's railways are fast, scenic and reliable. The national operator OBB runs everything from sleek Railjet trains (Vienna to Salzburg in about 2.5 hours) to regional services into the Alps. Buy tickets in the OBB app or at red ticket machines, and look for Sparschiene advance fares from around 9-19 euros between major cities. Private operator WESTbahn also runs the Vienna-Salzburg-Innsbruck corridor, often a few euros cheaper.

  • Vienna to Salzburg: from about 19 euros, 2.5 hours
  • Vienna to Graz: roughly 2.5 hours via the new Koralm route
  • Vienna to Innsbruck: about 4.5 hours by Railjet

City transport: U-Bahn, trams and buses

Vienna has a superb integrated network of U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses run by Wiener Linien. A single ride is 2.40 euros; a 24-hour pass is around 8 euros and a 72-hour pass about 17 euros. Validate tickets before boarding and keep them, as checks are frequent. Salzburg, Graz, Linz and Innsbruck rely on efficient tram and trolleybus systems.

Buses and intercity travel

For regions without rail, Postbus fills the gaps, especially in Tyrol and Carinthia valleys. International coaches like FlixBus connect Vienna with Budapest, Prague and Munich cheaply. In remote areas, check timetables carefully because rural buses can run only a few times a day.

Renting a car

A car is ideal for Alpine routes like the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (toll around 39 euros per car). To use motorways you need a vignette sticker or digital pass (about 12.40 euros for 10 days). Some mountain tunnels and passes carry separate tolls. Drive on the right, dipped headlights are sensible in tunnels, and winter tyres are legally required in wintry conditions.

Ride apps and taxis

Bolt, Uber and FREENOW all operate in Vienna and several larger cities, usually cheaper than street taxis. The local 40100 and 31300 taxi apps are popular too. For short hops, Vienna's WienMobil and Citybike schemes offer bikes and e-scooters.

Smart tips

  • Buy long-distance train tickets early for the cheapest fares
  • The Klimaticket offers unlimited nationwide travel for frequent travellers
  • Trains run punctually, so arrive a few minutes early
