First Time in Australia? Essential Travel Tips

Plugs, packing, slang and staying online — a practical first-timer's guide to travelling Australia with confidence.

Before you go

Australia is huge — Sydney to Perth is a four-hour flight, not a day trip. Pick one or two regions rather than trying to see it all. Most travellers need an ETA or eVisitor visa, applied for online before departure.

Plugs and voltage

Australia uses Type I plugs (two flat angled pins plus an earth pin) and runs on 230V, 50Hz. Phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage, so you only need a cheap Type I adapter. Hair tools rated for 120V only will need a converter, not just an adapter. Many wall sockets have an on/off switch — flip it on or nothing charges.

Language basics

English is the language, but the slang is its own dialect:

  • Arvo = afternoon, brekkie = breakfast, servo = petrol station
  • Heaps = a lot, how ya going? = how are you
  • Thongs = flip-flops (not underwear), togs/bathers = swimwear

Aussies are informal and friendly — a relaxed "no worries" goes a long way.

Packing for the climate

Seasons are flipped: December to February is summer, June to August is winter. The sun is fierce — pack SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. "Slip, slop, slap" is national advice for a reason. Bring layers; desert nights and Tasmania get cold. Reef-safe sunscreen is appreciated near the Great Barrier Reef.

Quick tips

  • Tap to pay everywhere — cards and phones are accepted almost universally; cash is rarely needed.
  • Tipping is optional — staff earn a proper wage; round up if service was great.
  • Drive on the left and watch for kangaroos at dawn and dusk on country roads.
  • Distances are deceptive — fuel up before long outback stretches and carry water.
  • Wildlife is mostly harmless if you don't touch it; shake out shoes in remote areas.
  • Public transport uses tap cards — Opal in Sydney, Myki in Melbourne, Go Card in Brisbane.
  • Free water is normal — ask for tap water at any cafe.
  • Pharmacies (chemists) stock most basics; Medicare won't cover tourists, so get travel insurance.
