Getting Around Australia: A Complete Transport Guide

Trains, trams, buses, ride apps and car hire across Australia — practical tips for moving between and within Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and beyond.

Trains and metro

Australia's big cities each run their own urban rail. Sydney has an extensive Sydney Trains network plus a driverless Metro; Melbourne runs frequent Metro Trains; Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide have suburban lines too. You tap on and off with a contactless card or phone, or a local card like Sydney's Opal or Melbourne's Myki.

  • Sydney and Brisbane now accept tap-to-pay bank cards directly at gates
  • Melbourne still requires a Myki card for trains, trams and buses
  • Fares are distance- or zone-based; Sundays and daily caps make travel cheaper

Trams and light rail

Melbourne has the world's largest tram network, and the City Circle (Route 35) is free in the central grid — the Free Tram Zone covers the CBD and Docklands. Sydney, the Gold Coast (G:link) and Canberra also run modern light rail.

Buses

Buses reach suburbs and towns that trains miss. In cities they use the same Opal/Myki/tap system. For long distances, Greyhound Australia and regional coaches connect the east coast — handy for backpackers hopping Cairns to Brisbane to Sydney.

Ride apps and taxis

  • Uber operates in all major cities, plus Uber Eats everywhere
  • DiDi, Ola and Bolt often undercut Uber on price
  • 13cabs is the main taxi-booking app; airport taxi ranks are metered

Car rental and driving

For the Great Ocean Road, the Outback or wine regions, a car is essential. Australians drive on the left. Major firms (Hertz, Avis, Budget) and local outfits operate at every airport.

  • Distances are huge — Sydney to Melbourne is about 9 hours by road
  • Watch for kangaroos at dawn and dusk; avoid driving the Outback at night
  • Fuel and rest stops thin out fast in the interior; carry water

Intercity and long-distance

Domestic flights (Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia) are usually the fastest way between capitals. For scenery, iconic trains like The Ghan (Adelaide–Darwin) and the Indian Pacific (Sydney–Perth) are journeys in themselves. The XPT and regional trains link NSW towns.
