Australia's seasons are upside down
Because Australia sits in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons run opposite to Europe and North America. Summer is December to February, autumn March to May, winter June to August, and spring September to November. The continent is huge, so the tropical north (Darwin, Cairns) behaves very differently from the temperate south (Melbourne, Tasmania).
Summer (December-February)
Peak season in the south. Sydney, Melbourne and the beaches are warm to hot, often 25-35C. This is the busiest and priciest time, especially around Christmas and the January school holidays, so book accommodation early.
In the tropical north (Cairns, Darwin, the Kimberley) this is the wet season: humid, with heavy afternoon storms and a cyclone risk. Marine stingers make the sea unsafe without a stinger suit.
Autumn (March-May)
Often the sweet spot. Mild temperatures across the southeast, fewer crowds and lower prices. Great for wine regions like the Barossa and Margaret River, and for exploring cities comfortably.
Winter (June-August)
Cool and sometimes wet in the south, but this is the best time for the tropical north and the Outback. Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru are dry, sunny and pleasant (often 20-28C). It is also ski season in the Victorian and NSW alps - Thredbo, Perisher and Falls Creek.
Spring (September-November)
Another shoulder-season favourite. Wildflowers bloom across Western Australia, whales migrate along both coasts, and temperatures are comfortable nationwide before the summer crowds arrive.
Key events by month
- January: Sydney Festival; Australian Open tennis (Melbourne)
- March: Melbourne Food and Wine Festival; F1 Australian Grand Prix
- April: Anzac Day (25th), nationwide
- June: Vivid Sydney light festival ends; ski season opens
- September: AFL Grand Final (Melbourne); WA wildflower season peaks
- November: Melbourne Cup (first Tuesday)
So when should you go?
For a classic city-and-beach trip, aim for autumn or spring. For the Reef, Uluru and the tropical north, choose winter (the dry season). For skiing, come July to August.
