Andorra at a glance
Tucked between France and Spain high in the Pyrenees, Andorra is a tiny principality famous for duty-free shopping, ski resorts like Grandvalira, and mountain hiking. The capital, Andorra la Vella, sits at roughly 1,000 metres, so even summer evenings turn cool.
Plugs and voltage
Andorra uses 230V at 50Hz, the same standard as the rest of continental Europe. Sockets are Type C and Type F (the round two-pin plugs used in France and Spain).
- UK, US and Australian travellers need an adapter.
- US devices that are not dual-voltage (120/240V) also need a converter.
- Most phone and laptop chargers handle 100-240V automatically, so check the label first.
Language basics
The official language is Catalan, but Spanish and French are widely understood, and English is common in hotels and ski schools. A few words go a long way:
- Hola (hello), Adeu (goodbye)
- Si us plau (please), Gracies (thank you)
- Quant val? (how much is it?)
What to pack
Mountain weather changes fast, so pack in layers.
- A warm jacket and waterproof shell, even in summer
- Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots
- Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen (UV is strong at altitude)
- A reusable water bottle and a small daypack
Getting around
Andorra has no airport and no train station. Most visitors arrive by bus or car from Barcelona, Toulouse or the airports at Barcelona-El Prat and Toulouse-Blagnac (about 2.5-3 hours). Within the country, a public bus network links the main towns cheaply.
Connectivity
Andorra is not in the EU, so EU roaming bundles often do not apply here and can be expensive. The local operator is Andorra Telecom (Mobiland). An eSIM is the simplest way to stay online without hunting for a SIM shop.
Quick tips
- Carry cash for small shops, though cards are widely accepted; the currency is the euro.
- Fill up on fuel here, it's cheaper than in France or Spain.
- Shop duty-free for electronics, perfume and alcohol, but keep receipts for customs.
- Book ski passes online in winter to skip queues at Grandvalira and Vallnord.
- Check border crossings; passport or ID is needed as Andorra is outside the Schengen common-visa setup.
- Tip modestly, rounding up or 5-10% is plenty.
- Altitude matters, drink water and ease into strenuous hikes.
